Welcome

What is important to us about our history is communicated in many ways. Books, newspapers, radio and television are all media that both reflect and convey our sense of history. However, in the United States what is important to us about things that happened and their significance is clearly reflected in the various markers that punctuate our highways. Each one beckons us to pull over, take in a piece of history, and consider the landscape that in past days hosted events so significance that our fathers have chosen to give of their time and money to place a lasting remembrance. The purpose of this site is to catalog and promote these remembrances.

Historical Exclamation Marks!

Historic Bits is our sister site. It promotes the consideration of historical topics as reflected in historical markers and monuments. This tradition is expressed in essays that gather together and topically organize these bits of history.

In our opinion this is an interesting and exciting way to understand what has been deemed collectively interesting on any given topic. We encourage others to participate in these studies and are glad to provide, for the asking, ideas on topics and the related texts and locations of markers and monuments.
Visit Historic Bits today to enjoy a more in-depth consideration of history.

Adopt a County

We are pleased to announce a wonderful opportunity to share your heritage by adopting a county. When you adopt a county you will make your community more meaningful to others by engaging in one or more of the following activities:

  • Research history as it is reflected in the markers in your county.
  • Add pictures of markers and historical sites.
  • Add Markers and/or Monuments to our Collection.
  • Tell the 'rest of the story' in comments.

For you efforts your name will be prominently displayed as photographer on markers where you add pictures. More importantly, you will receive the rewards that flow from giving.

There is no charge to adopt a county and lots of help if you need it. Just contact us to get started.
